Nothing transforms a venue like candlelight. Planning it well means the right quantities, a mix of heights and attention to safety.
Quantities
- Round table of 8–10: one centrepiece cluster (3–5 candles) plus 4–6 votives.
- Long table: a taper or pillar every 45–60 cm, with tealights between.
- Aisle or pathway: a lantern every 1–1.5 m.
- Stage or backdrop: clusters of pillars at three heights.
Mix heights
Combine tall tapers, mid-height pillars and low tealights. Add floating candles in urlis or glass cylinders.
Scent rules
Use unscented candles on dining tables so they don't compete with food. Put scented candles at the entrance, lounge areas and washrooms.
Safety
- Check the venue's rules on open flames.
- Use glass holders and lanterns outdoors.
- Keep candles away from drapes and floral arches.
- Assign someone to extinguish candles at the end.
