How to Trim a Candle Wick (and Why It Matters More Than You Think)

If you do only one thing to care for your candles, trim the wick. It takes five seconds and changes everything: the flame steadies, soot disappears, the jar stays clean and the candle lasts longer.

The 5 mm rule

Before every burn, trim the wick to about 5 mm (a quarter of an inch). A longer wick draws up more wax than it can burn cleanly, producing a tall, flickering flame that releases black smoke and stains the glass.

When to trim

• Before the very first burn — wicks are often left long for packing.
• Before every relight, once the wax has cooled and hardened.
• Whenever you see a "mushroom" — a black blob of carbon at the tip.

Tools

A wick trimmer, with its angled blades, reaches deep into jars and catches the clipping. Small scissors work for tins and pillars. Some people pinch the charred tip off with a tissue once cool. Always remove the trimmed bit — debris in the wax can act as a second wick.

Why wicks mushroom

Mushrooming happens when the wick takes up more fuel than it can burn — from burning too long, a wick that's too large, or heavy fragrance. Keep sessions under four hours and trim regularly.

Don't over-trim

A wick cut too short gives a tiny flame that can drown in its own melt pool. If that happens, pour off a little liquid wax onto a paper towel and relight.

Pair trimming with a proper first burn and your candle will reach its full burn time.
