How Long Does a Candle Really Last? A Guide to Burn Time
From 4-hour tealights to 70-hour three-wick candles — what determines burn time and how to make your candle last longer.

"How many hours will it burn?" is one of the questions we're asked most — especially by people comparing prices. Burn time depends on wax weight, wax type, wick and how you burn it.
Typical burn times for soy candles
- Tealight: about 4 hours.
- 120 g tin (like our Jasmine Evening Tin): 25–28 hours.
- 180 g jar: 35–40 hours.
- 220 g luxe jar: 45–50 hours.
- 600 g three-wick: 60–70 hours.
These figures assume burns of up to four hours with a trimmed wick and no draughts.
What shortens a candle's life
- Long wicks that make big flames.
- Draughts that speed melting on one side.
- Tunnelling, which wastes wax at the edges.
- Very long sessions that overheat the jar.
How to make it last longer
- Do a full first burn.
- Trim to 5 mm before every light.
- Burn in sessions of two to four hours.
- Put the lid on between burns to keep dust off the wick.
Price per hour
When comparing candles, divide the price by the burn time. A well-made soy candle often costs less per hour of fragrance than a cheaper candle that tunnels or burns fast.
