Urli Decoration Ideas for Festivals, Weddings and Every Day
Flowers, floating candles and water — how to style a traditional urli for the entrance, puja room or a festive table.

An urli — a wide, shallow bowl of brass or stone filled with water and flowers — is one of the most beautiful traditional décor pieces in Indian homes. With floating candles it becomes magical at night.
Everyday urli
Water, a handful of rose or mogra petals and three floating candles at the entrance. Change the water and flowers every day or two.
Diwali urli
Marigold petals in rings of orange and yellow, with floating candles and a diya on a small stand in the centre.
Wedding urli
White flowers — mogra, rajnigandha, white roses — with floating candles in your wedding colour. Line several urlis along the entrance.
Tips
- Use floating candles made to float steadily.
- Add a few drops of essential oil to the water for fragrance.
- Keep the urli away from walkways so guests don't knock it.
- In Vastu, a water urli near the entrance is said to welcome positive energy.
