Bought candles for Diwali in September, or stocked up on gifts? A little care keeps them looking and smelling as good as the day they were poured — even in a North Indian summer.
Keep them cool
Soy wax softens in heat. Store candles below about 25–28°C, away from windowsills, car boots and rooms that heat up in the afternoon. A cupboard in an air-conditioned room is ideal in May and June.
Keep them dark
Direct sunlight fades colours and can weaken fragrance. Keep candles in their boxes or a closed cupboard.
Keep the lid on
Lids and boxes keep dust off the wax and wick and slow the fragrance fading. If a candle has no lid, cover it with its box or a saucer.
Store tapers flat
Tall tapers can bend in warm weather. Store them lying flat in their box.
How long does fragrance last?
Stored well, a scented candle keeps its fragrance for a year or more, though it is at its best within the first twelve months. Lighting it regularly isn't harmful.
