Monsoon Moods: Candle Scents for Rainy Days
Petrichor, chai and wet earth — fragrances that match the romance (and the damp) of the Indian monsoon.
By Avnika Creations

The first rain on dry earth has a smell so beloved it has a name — petrichor. The monsoon is romantic: chai, pakoras, music and long evenings indoors. It also brings damp cupboards and musty corners. Fragrance can help with both.
Cosy scents for rainy evenings
- Vanilla chai — ginger, cardamom and black tea over soft vanilla. Our Vanilla Chai Candle was made for monsoon afternoons.
- Coffee and cocoa — rich and indulgent with a book.
- Sandalwood — warm and comforting.
Scents that echo the rain
Vetiver (khus) smells earthy and green, like wet roots. Paired with fresh herbs it brings the outside in.
Fighting monsoon mustiness
- Air rooms during dry spells.
- Use fresh scents like lemongrass or eucalyptus in damp rooms.
- Keep candles in a dry cupboard so the wax doesn't absorb moisture.
- Use reed diffusers in rooms where an open flame isn't practical.
Safety in the rains
Power cuts mean more candles around the house. Use jars and lanterns rather than bare tealights, and never leave them unattended.
