Oud for Beginners: Understanding the World's Most Precious Scent

Oud has perfumed palaces, mosques and haveli courtyards for centuries, and today it's one of the most sought-after notes in luxury fragrance. If you've never tried it, it can be surprising.

What is oud?

Oud comes from agarwood trees in Assam, South-East Asia and beyond. When the tree is infected by a particular mould, it defends itself by producing a dark, fragrant resin. That resin-soaked heartwood is distilled into oud oil — one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery.

What does it smell like?

Woody, smoky and resinous, with leathery and slightly sweet facets. Some ouds are animalic and intense; modern blends are smoother. Candles use oud accords — compositions inspired by the real thing — which are softer and more wearable.

How oud is usually paired

  • Saffron adds a golden, slightly leathery spice.
  • Rose softens oud into something romantic.
  • Amber gives warmth and glow.
  • Black pepper lifts it with a spicy top.

Enjoying oud at home

Oud is an evening scent. Light it in a living room after dinner, during festivals, or in a large space where its depth can unfold. Start with a balanced blend like our Oud & Amber Luxe Jar; if you love it, go darker with the Black Oud Three-Wick.

A gift that feels special

Because of its association with luxury, an oud candle makes an impressive corporate or festive gift — especially for clients in the Middle East, where oud is part of everyday hospitality.
